1940 Ideal SUPERMAN Jointed Wood Composition 13 Doll Figure! Vintage Superhero

Original 1939/1940 Ideal Novelty Jointed Wood Composition Superman Doll Figure. It is 13 tall. As you can see in the photos, Superman has some condition issues – may make for a nice restoration project. The wooden torso, legs, arms and hands are actually in pretty decent condition. The inner strings that bind it together have elasticity and are keeping the toy pretty tight. Face and feet have been painted. One of the feet appear to be a remake (out of wood), while the other foot appears to be original (I see some of what appears to be the original red paint peeking through). There is chipping of the paint/composition on Superman’s back as is apparent in the photo’s (a replacement cape would cover this eyesore). Paint missing on his chest. Don’t know if anything can be done to restore the face – might be as simple as removing the brown paint (paint has a kind of chalky feel to it – may be easy to remove – I have not tried it). One good thing is that the “S” decal on the front is mostly there. Some of the writing on his belt also remains. There is no cape. 4½ inches tall and 2¾. Inches across his wild and crazy disguise. This little guy is showing off a super piece of driftwood. This is an original and one-of-a-kind carving made from driftwood, naturally smoothed by the sand and sea of the Pacific Northwest Coast. I collect driftwood during and after the winter storms then carve this wood using rotary grinding tools and small knives. I give each of my wood spirits a rustic patina using a stain I create from oil paints then finish up with a polyurethane spray.
